Samuel Baldwin (1755-1838) has been claimed by many as an ancestor who qualifies them for membership in the Sons and Daughters of the Revolution. He enlisted in the Continental Army in 1780 as a private in the 5th Connecticut regiment under Col. Philip B. Bradley. Bradley's major battles were fought before Samuel's enlistment, so it is unlikely that he saw much action. Samuel was enlisted long enough (6 months), however, to be eligible for pension in 1831, which he collected until his death.

Samuel was sixth in birth order in his parents' (Samuel Baldwin and Mercy Stanley) family. He was born in Goshen, Litchfield County, Connecticut. He married Lucina Hill (1761–1823), daughter of Ambrose Hill (1744-1816) and Lucy Beach (1746–1838) of Goshen, after his military service ended in 1881. The 1820 and 1830 U. S. censuses document his residence in Lexington, Greene County, New York, but based on information pertaining to the births of his 11 children, he likely made the move to Greene County between 1788 and 1790.
