Brian T. Harvey was born February 6, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Virginia and Harry Grant Harvey. He died July 22, 2005, in Everett, after a long and valiant struggle against the asbestos-caused cancer, mesothelioma. The son of a Methodist minister, Brian grew up in a number of small, rural towns, mostly in the west, and was a skilled hunter and fisherman by the time he graduated high school. As a young man, he went on to graduate from Washington State University with two degrees, one in English and one in History. Brian was a life-long scholar and before the cancer altered his life plans, he was studying for a Master's Degree in Anthropology from Washington State University, while working full time as a Systems Analyst Programmer and Software Developer.
Brian began helping other mesothelioma patients and their families shortly after completing the first stage of his own treatment for this disease in May, 2001. This activity led him to become involved in the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (MARF), where he served as a Family Advocacy Board member until January of 2003. Brian was tireless in his desire to encourage other mesothelioma victims. He spent many hours on the telephone and computer, sharing his own experiences. He urged those who struggled as he had and were often discouraged to fight and not give up.
Brian is survived by his wife of 20 years, Sue Ellen Harvey; son and daughter-in-law, Ethan and Karen Ehrstine; daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Kraig Oman; daughter and her fiance, Amy Ehrstine and Steve Ellisor; daughter and son-in-law, Valerie Jean and Brad Webber; mother, Virginia Harvey; brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Sherry Harvey; nephews, Kirk (Blanca) Harvey, and Scott Harvey; niece, Kris Harvey; and seven grand-children.
There will be a memorial service for Brian, at 2 p.m., Friday, July 29, at Allen Creek Community Church, Marysville, Washington. Arrangements under the direction of Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home, Marysville.
Memorials in his name may be made to MARF, Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation. Website: www.marf.org
