A memorial service for William "Bill" Legrand Avin, 75, of Collinsville, who died Jan. 8, 2009, at his home, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett Chapel. Minister Tim Wood and the Rev. Bonnylee Witt will officiate.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service Monday.

Avin was born in Sumter, S.C., on Dec. 9, 1933, to Eddie Marshall Avin and Alma Johnson Avin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, William L. "Sam" Avin Jr.; two sisters, Nita A. Richmond and Mildred Timmons; and a brother, Leroy Avin.

He served in the Air Force for 20 years, including tours of duty in the Korean conflict and in Vietnam and retired as a master sergeant.

After retiring, he worked as the terminal manager at Blue Ridge Transfer for 20 years. He was a member of AMVETS Post 35 and had held several positions there. He was a Baptist by faith.

Surviving are three daughters, Judith A. Witt of Bassett, Tina A. Grubb of Helena, Ark., and Ellen P. Stephens of Bluffton, S.C.; two sons, William D. "Danny" Avin of Wiggins, Miss., and Kevin R. Avin of New Orleans, La.; two sisters, Bessie A. McCleod of Pinewood, S.C., and Joyce A. French of Portage, Pa.; two brothers, Charles E. Avin of Pinewood and Kenneth A. Avin of Sumter; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
