FINAL RITES HELD
DEC 22 FOR G. W. DAY
Funeral services for George
Washington Day, 73, well-known
Richlands merchant and resi-
dent, were held Tuesday after-
noon, December 22, at the
Richlands Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Day died in a local
hospital the previous Sunday
night after a brief illness.
He was born at Jewell Ridge,
the son of the late Albert
and Laura Jewell Day. Mr. Day
had taught in the public
schools of Buchanan County for
a number of years, after which
he was store manager for the
Jewell Ridge Coal Company for
some 10 years. He also owned
and operated the Day Grocery
Store in Richlands until ill
health forced his retirement.
He was a member and Elder in
the Richlands Presbyterian
Church.
Active in Masonic affairs,
he was a member of the Rich-
lands Lodge, the Royal Arch
and chapters at Tazewell,
and the Commandery at Blue-
field, Va. He was also a
member of the Consistery and
Scottish Rite of Roanoke and
Kazim Temple. He was a mem-
ber of the Richlands Order
of the Eastern Star.
He was a charter member of
the Richlands Kiwanis Club.
Surviving are his wife,
Mrs. Mattie Nipper Day and
three children, Mrs. Mildred
Hunsaker, and Perry P. Day,
both of Richlands, and Mrs.
Juanita Jewell, Akron, Ohio.
One step-son, Hoy Lee Brown,
Columbus, Ohio; seven sisters,
Mrs. Mary Chambers, Jewell
Valley, Ms. Pearl Alitzier,
Jewell Ridge, Mrs. Gracie
Goss, Richlands, Mrs. Cloy
Altizer, Short Gap, Mrs.
Sallie Gilbert, Cedar Bluff,
Mrs. Abie Vance, Swords
Creek, and Mrs. Gladys Mc-
Glothlin, Chicago; four
brothers, Gus Day, Harmon,
Va., Hobert Day, Norfolk,
Va., Sam Day, Seavor, W. Va.,
and Roby Day, Alexandria,
Va. One son, Cecil Day was
killed in World War II.
Dr. T. A. Freeman and the
Rev. J. B. Hollenhead were
in charge of the funeral
service. Interment was in
the Hankins Cemetery with
Masonic graveside rites.
Pallbearers were: Harry
Patteson, Harry Lindsey,
Harve Smith, S. Nassif,
Herman Watts, Lawrence Cook,
Henry Norman, Claude Banner,
and Gordon Farmer.
