Patrick Barnett was born in Ireland, possibly County Cork about 1828, the son of John Barnett and Bridget Sullivan. On the seventh of April, 1866, he married Mary Ann Mead(e) in McGregor, Iowa, and the couple settled on a farm in Mendon township, near McGregor.

Patrick and Mary Ann were the parents of twelve children, all born in Iowa, most likely at home:

Bridget A. "Bee", born 12 Jan 1867, married to Thomas James O'Hara.
John James, born 12 Jul 1868, married to Elizabeth Clifford
Daniel Vincent, born 28 Jun 1871, married to Elizabeth Maloney
Johanna M, born 9 Sep 1875
Katherine Ann "Katie", born 26 Jun 1877, married to John Patrick "Jack" O'Keefe.
William John, born 8 May 1879
Margaret Theresa Barnett, born 24 Mar 1882, married to Timothy Francis O'Hara
Patrick James, Jr., born 24 Mar 1882
Elizabeth Anastasia "Lizzie", born 17 Nov 1884, married to Jeremiah William O'Hara
James Raymond "Jouser", born 21 Jun 1886
Mary Ann "Mamie", born 25 Mar 1888
and an infant, lost at the same time as Patrick's wife, who died in childbirth in 1890.

Throughout his residence in the McGregor area, Patrick pursued the occupation of a farmer, although it appears he was working for the railroad in his younger years and declares that as his occupation on the 1870 census. He was a member of the Catholic church.

After the death of his wife in 1890, Patrick raised the children on his own and never remarried.

Patrick died on the 23rd of January, 1911 in Mendon township, Clayton county, Iowa. Patrick shares a final resting place with his son, Patrick James, Jr. who met his end in a tragic train accident on the 22nd of May, 1910.
