During the month of February the Battalion operated extensively thorough out an area where the Dai Loc and Duc Duc Districts met in Quang Nam Province, known to Marines as the An Hoa basin and more frequently called the "Arizona Territory" because of its reputation of being an enemy strong hold.

While on patrol south of the Vu Gia River near the hamlet of My Hiep (4) the Marines began pursuit of a suspicious Vietnamese when suddenly there was an explosion. A Marine had tripped a BT (Booby Trap) the 105 mm artillery round had been rigged as a mine by the enemy. The explosion killed two men and two Marines were wounded. Evacuated to the NSA Station Hospital Cpl Vezeau died as a result of the multi fragmentation wounds he had received from the hostile explosive device.
