Hiram was the son of Albert and Elizabeth Ammerman. On September 17, 1863 Hiram's name was listed in the newspaper at Troy, Pa, as being among men in Fishing Creek township who were drafted into the Union Army.
He later married Martha Alice Roat. They later moved to Nebraska in the 1870's with their children Jesse, Laura, and Lillian. By 1877 Hiram worked as a blacksmith in York County where his daughter Eva was born that year. The following year he was joined by a former neighbor from Columbia County named Daniel Beishline. Beishline came out by railroad and the two families stayed together for a few days while the Beishline's bought their own place.
He then moved to what became the town of Hull in Banner County where he died at his homestead of rheumatoid ersphylisis. He was buried there at first but later moved to Pleasant Hill Cemetery where he is buried with his family.
Three years after his death his widow married Warren Salisbury.
