Husband of Henrietta M. Luebbering, married May 24, 1950

Walter Frank Kleffner, 91, of Jefferson City, went home to our Lord and Savior on December 15, 2009. He was born February 2, 1918, in Cedar Rapids, Nebraska, a son of the late Aloysius L. and Regina G. (Brockwinkle) Kleffner. On May 24, 1950, he was united in marriage in St. Thomas, Missouri, to Henrietta Marie Luebbering, who survives at their home. Walter bravely served his country for six years (Sept. 1941 to Sept. 1947) with great pride in the United States Navy during World War II, serving on submarines in the South Pacific theater. He continued his service through numerous veterans' and submariners' organizations, including the Muddy Missouri Submarine Vets, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 1003, and the American Legion, Post 5. Walter (Wally) was a loving and devoted husband and father, teaching his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, honesty and loyalty. Walter loved to regale family and friends with stories of his time in the service and the adventures on which life had taken him; he enjoyed building trailers, fishing, listening to country music at Taos Corner and playing cards with the neighbors, he valued family and friends above all else and enjoyed his time with all of his family and friends in his final days. Walter was a farmer most of his life, worked for John Deere in Iowa, several years for Delongs, Inc. and with the Missouri Supreme Court. He was a firm believer in helping his neighbors. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Taos, Missouri, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #2693. He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Henrietta, and six children: Cathie Buxie of San Antonio, Texas; Marilyn Schmidt of Lee's Summit, Missouri; Larry Kleffner (Karen Logan) and Steve "Pete" Kleffner (Phyllis Hughes) of Jefferson City, Missouri; Becky Lee and husband Chuck of Holts Summit, Missouri; and William Kleffner of Olathe, Kansas. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alfred Kleffner and wife Dorothy of Westphalia, Missouri; Raymond Kleffner and wife Irma; and Donald Kleffner, all of Jefferson City, Missouri, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and god-children. He was preceded in death by two children: John and Patty Kleffner; parents: Aloysius and Regina Kleffner; and six brothers: Lawrence, Otto, Charles, Andrew, Joseph, and Clarence. Friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2009, at the Taos Knights of Columbus, where the Rosary will be recited at 3:45 p.m. Friends will also be received from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Saturday at the Taos Knights of Columbus. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 19, 2009, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos, Missouri, with Fr. Wayne M. Boyer officiating. Interment with full military honors will follow in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery. Grandsons Bradley Kleffner, Ryan Schmidt and John Buxie, as well as Jim Schneiders, David Morff, and Randy Kleffner will be serving as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Walter's honor to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos, Missouri.
