Hawkins Dies Friday After 3 Weeks Illness
Talmage Hawkins, 49-year-old owner of the Hawkins Grocery at 730 West Howe street, and former city councilman, died at 8:25 p.m. Friday at his home, 511 South Euclid avenue, after an illness of three weeks, caused by gallstones.
A special double casket is being made to order for Mr. Hawkins, who weighed around 320 pounds at the time of his death, having abnormally gained about 100 pounds in the past years. His over-weight condition made it impossible for physicians to operate.
Mr. Hawkins has owned his present store for the past 18 months. Previous to that, he had been in the grocery business at various locations in Bloomington for a number of years. He served as a city councilman from 1925 to 1929. He was a member of the First Baptist church and the Eagles lodge.
Besides his wife, Mr. Hawkins leaves six children; Mrs. Bryce Gray of this city, Mrs. Dale Taylor of Connersville, and Miss Mary Ellen Hawkins, Miss Betty Jane Hawkins, Talmage Hawkins, Jr. and Sandra Lee Hawkins, all of this city. Other survivors are his mother Mrs. Sarah Hawkins, East Second street, four half-brothers; Frank, Harry and Fred Hawkins, and Edgar Tate of Monroe county and six half sisters; Elva Kinser, Sabra Blackwell, of Franklin, Pauline Prince, of Chapel Hill, Lillie Clark, of Sanders, Mary East, of Bloomington, and Millie Tate, of Madison. He also leaves one granddaughter, Shirley Gray.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, at the Nazarene church, with the Rev. Leo Davis and the Rev. Dr. John Mann Walker officiating. Interment will be in the Valhalla cemetery.
