Herman Alonzo McCrorey was born in Kansas City, Missouri on October 1, 1936, to parents John and Nellie M. Roper McCrorey. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and served from 1953 to 1955.

He married JoAn Marian Snyder on April 6, 1956 in Kansas City. They had two children: Carissa Lynn, born 1965; and Jeffrey Todd, born 1968.

Herman died in Kansas City on February 6, 2005, and is buried in Floral Hills Cemetery in Kansas City.
