Mary was the daughter of Gustav Koester and Mary Smith Koester. Gustav was a well known banker in the Davenport area and was well to do for that time period. Mary was married to Alexander Eseke after the two of them eloped to Denver, CO. Aleck and Mary lived in the same neighborhood during their younger years, so most likely knew each other most of their lives. Her parents were against the marriage to Aleck. Mary and Alexander only had one son Adolf born in IA. The family than moved to Sherburn, MN., but sometime after 1905 they moved to Carson City, NV. and changed the spelling of their last name to Eske. Adolf was not a healthy child and the cold winters in MN. caused him problems, so the family moved to Carson City, NV. The family remained in the area for many years before moving on the Oakland, CA. Adolf was named after Mary's father Adolf Koester. At some point he changed his name to Allan.
