Mrs. Hazel Eckard Fisher, 96, a resident of Harrisonburg, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Thursday, July 3, 2008, at Rockingham Memorial Hospital after a year of illness.

A daughter of the late Arthur and Lillie Lou Smith Eckard, she was born on Sept. 24, 1911, in Sugar Grove, W.Va.

She had formerly made her home in Bridgewater where she graduated from Bridgewater High School and had been living in Harrisonburg for 80 years. Mrs. Fisher was an avid gardener and a wonderful wife, mother and adoring grandmother.

She was a teller at the voter registration polls and a past member of the Park View Home Demonstration Club. She was the oldest member of Otterbein United Methodist Church and class officer of the Rebecca Sunday School Class for many years.

On April 6, 1936, she married Otto Woodrow Fisher, who preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1992.

She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn F. Johnson and husband, Bill, and Thelma F. Bourne and husband, Don, all of Harrisonburg, and Mary Lou F. Whitmore and husband, Elwood, of Mount Crawford: nine grandchildren, Neil F. Johnson, William M. Johnson, James Arthur Johnson, Carolyn
Jane-Marie Paradzinski, Nelson W. Bourne, Christopher L. Bourne, Laura Jane Bauserman, Maria Jane W. Cowart, and Jeremy C. Whitmore; and 11 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Otterbein United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Grogan officiating.

A private family burial will be held at Eastlawn
Memorial Gardens at an earlier time.

The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.

The Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Harrisonburg Rescue Squad, or Otterbein United Methodist Church.
