Melba Virginia (Bishop) Woodward, 89, of Magnolia Manor, died Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

Born November 27, 1915, in Inman, she was the daughter of the late William Bobo Bishop and Eula (Wofford) Bishop and wife of the late Alva Elroy Woodward.

A 1933 graduate of Spartanburg High School, she was a retired secretary/bookkeeper at Woodward Sales Company, Tom's Snack Foods.

Melba was an active and devoted member of Fairforest Baptist Church since 1941, where she was a member of the Willie Crain Sunday School class, the Bernandine Campbell WMU Circle and Yesterday's Children's Choir. She loved her church and her Lord.

Being an avid gardener, she was the oldest member and past president of the Fairforest Garden Club, of which she so willingly worked on different committees, always striving to beautify her community.

A past Board member of the Spartanburg Garden Club Council, she served as Garden Therapy Chairman and Chairman of the House of Flowers. She volunteered for gardening projects at nursing homes and worked with the youth. When she received the Woman of the Year Award in 1984, Melba was recognized for her outstanding garden club, along with civic and church work. She was also a Nationally Accredited Flower Show Judge and a member of the In-Depth Study Club and the Iris Society. In addition, she was a long-time member of the Eastern Star, past Royal Matron, a past Worthy Matron in Amaranths, and a past High Priestess in White Shrine.

Survivors include a son, Allen Charles Woodward of High Springs, FL; three grandsons, William Anthony Woodward of Chesnee, Gary Weber Woodward of Walnut Grove, and Allen Charles Woodward, II of Redding, CA; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie Trotter of Spartanburg and Ellen Easler of Pompano Beach FL.

She was predeceased by two sons, William Lanthan Woodward and Judson Elroy Woodward.

Visitation was 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2005 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel.

Funeral services were held 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at Fairforest Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Gary Hensley and the Rev. Joe Dempsey. Entombment was at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Spanish Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials could be made to the Fairforest Baptist Church Building Fund, PO Box 338, Fairforest, SC 29336; or to the Hatcher Garden and Woodland Preserve, P.O. Box 29337, Spartanburg, SC 29304.
