Thank you Lester for the added information...

John Greenup Simpson was born in Kentucky on October 22, 1829.

Like many others caught up in the Gold Rush, he headed for the gold fields settling on Mariposa to search for gold.

More successful as a teamster than as a miner, he began hauling goods from the mountains to the valley eventually deciding to settle at Dry Creek in 1852.

He married Sarah M Baley in 1859 and was eventually to become Fresno County's first tax collector.

Sarah and John had 7 children including Marvin Simpson who went on to serve in the California Legislature.

He worked helping to construct the buildings that would make up the school known as "The Academy".

The land on which the church at Academey was built (the oldest church in Fresno County) was donated by John Greenup Simpson.
