Col. Stone, who lived in Annapolis, was born in the Philippines. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1929. During the 1930s, he trained as a fighter pilot at various locations in the continental United States and in Hawaii. He also was a mail pilot in California.
During World War II, he trained a fighter group in England and then led it to Morocco, where he was wounded in a bombing attack. Later in the war, Col. Stone served in Washington on the joint war plans committee of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was assigned to the Potsdam Conference in Germany in July of 1945.
He retired from the Army Air Forces on medical disability in 1946. His military decorations included the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart and the Air Medal.
From 1947 to 1956, Col. Stone was superintendent of Sears Roebuck stores in Bladensburg and Arlington. From 1956 until 1965, he worked in the office of aerospace research for the Department of the Air Force.
He was a member of the Air Force Association and the Annapolis Yacht Club.
His first wife, Virginia Baish Stone, died in 1969.
Survivors include his wife, Rhoda Tolford Stone of Annapolis; four children from his first marriage, Jane Novak of Bellevue, Neb., John N. Stone Jr. of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Navy Rear Adm. Thomas E. Stone of McLean and R. Timothy Stone of Towaco, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Margaret Loomis of Fogelsville, Pa. and Andrea Davis of Sarasota, Fla.; 17 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren.
