The City of Zeigler was first incorporated in 1914, previous to that time the town was owned by the Zeigler Coal Company, which believed that it was better for the miners to own their own homes and opened up the town to private enterprises about this time. The first Mayor was Conrad Slavin who was killed in the mine. The next mayor was Conrad Mitchell.

Walter Bayless, 74, 202 N Main St, Zeigler, died at 7:30pm Thursday in Herrin Hospital. He had been ill several months.

He was a retired Mine Foreman at Zeigler 1 Mine. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was born in Wolf Creek and lived in Zeigler for 48 years.

Mrs Bayless died in 1947.

He leaves sons, Everett "Red" Bayless, Zeigler; Gene Bayless, Chicago
Daughter, Mrs Cecile Mae Pease, Bardwell, KY
Sisters, Mrs Ruth Gary of Carbondale; Mrs Goldia Rushing of West Frankfort, Mrs Clara Wheat of Cambria, and Mrs Emma Turnage of Goreville.
Brothers, Newton Bayless of Omaha, NE; Robert Bayless of Wildwood, PA and Guy Bayless of Dowell.
