ALBION MAYOR, 1966-74. Obituary: "Victor S. Burstein, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a long-time Albion resident and former mayor, died Sunday, November 17, 2013. Mr. Burstein was born in Neenah, Wisconsin, in 1919, and spent his early years there. Father: Joseph D. Burstein. He was valedictorian of his high school graduating class at Neenah High School, graduating at the age of 16. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Madison, graduating with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. He earned a Ph.D. degree in organic chemistry from the Institute of Paper Chemistry, then at Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin.
Mr. Burstein served in Gen. Patton's Third Army in the European theater in World War II. He participated in the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp at Majdanek. Like many veterans, he did not speak much of his war experiences.
He married the former Margery Wiener of Albion, and the couple moved to Albion in 1954. He was an industrialist and businessman, an active civic leader, and benefactor of many Albion organizations.
He served as mayor of Albion from 1966 to 1974, following in the footsteps of his father in law, longtime mayor Norman Wiener. He was a trustee of the Albion Board of Education and served as its president. He was a leader in the Boy Scouts of America and was honored with its Silver Beaver award. He served on committees of Temple Beth Israel, Jackson. For the last decade, he made his home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Mr. Burstein is survived by his wife of 70 years, Margery; three sons, Dr. Paul D. Burstein of Mequon, Wisconsin, and his wife Sharon, John Burstein of Mexico City and his wife Maricl aire Acosta, and Steve Burstein of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and his wife Mary Burns. He is also survived by grandchildren Aaron Burstein, Baltimore, Maryland; Sarah Shirley, Mequon, and Sam Burstein, Colorado, and by great grandchildren Patrick and Katie Shirley, Mequon, and Jacob and Theo Burstein, Baltimore.
Mr. Burstein loved life and time with his family, He played tennis and golf into his 80s, and bridge until three weeks before his death. He valued honesty and truth. He was a voracious reader, and valued education and learning throughout his life. He had a wry wit and a gentle smile. He was a kind man who will be sorely missed by his family.
The family is grateful for the loving care given by Renata Kubiliute for several years and for the care of physicians Drs. Andy McGown, Charles Tiber and Anthony Linn. The family thanks Vitas for care given at the very end of a long life.
A graveside service is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Riverside Cemetery, Albion.
The service will be followed by a reception at the Mary Sheldon Ismon House at 4 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Columbia St. Mary's Foundation, Milwaukee, to perpetuate the work that added years to the lives of Victor and Margery Burstein."
