The son of Joseph S. Haldeman and Jane (Owen) Haldeman, he was first married to Eliza Ann Smith and then Elizabeth Watson in 1869.

Interesting note:
The last boat to pass through the 'Big Tunnel' on the Sandy and Beaver Canal at Hanover was the 'Hibernian' in the late spring of 1852. It was piloted by Captain E. L. Straughn and owned by 'AD' HALDEMAN and William Burgett, all of Hanover. The boat was taken to Cleveland, Ohio and sold.
