Leonard Joseph Ackley married Katherine A. Artwick on June 8, 1940.

DRYDEN - Leonard Joseph Ackley, age 87, of 2 Evergreen St., Dryden, NY and formerly of Bedford Hills, NY died Friday, Nov. 16, 2001 at home after a brief illness.
Leonard was born March 14, 1914 in Bedford Hills, a son of the late William J. and Carrie Fisher Ackley. He was graduated from St. Mary's School in Katonah, NY. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Africa, Italy and the Phillippines with the 19th Army Combat Engineers. He was employed by the L.R. Preston Painting Co. and later owned his own painting company before accepting a position with the Bedford Central District School as the head district painter retiring in 1978. On June 8, 1940 he married the former Katherine A. Artwick at St. Matthias Church in Bedford Hills. After retirement, they relocated to Dryden, NY in 1987 to be near their son. Len was a 53 year member of the Bedford Hills Fire Dept. where he was a past assistant chief of the hook & ladder company and remained an associate member. He was a cub scout leader and managed the Bedford Hills Fire Dept. Little League for many years. Leonard held memberships in the Knight of Columbus in Mt. Kisco, NY, the Dryden Township Post 8158, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Leonard T. Spaulding Post 1134, American Legion in Dryden and was a past member of the Holy Name Society of St. Mary's & St. Matthias Church. Locally he was a member of Holy Cross Church, Freeville, NY. Leonard was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle. His wit and sense of humor were a trademark that has left his dear family and friends with many memories.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 61 years, Katherine A. Ackley his son and daughter-in-law, Allen W. and Patricia Ackley and their son, Christopher W. Ackley, all of Dryden nieces, nephews and cousins including Eva Armentrout in California. Leonard was predeceased by his brother, William D. Ackley and three sisters, Irene Wallace, Emily Sivgney and Elsie Lennon.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 AM Monday at Holy Cross Church, 375 George Road, Freeville, NY with Rev. Bernard Carges as celebrant. Burial will follow in Willow Glen Cemetery with military honors provided by members of the Dryden Veterans Memorial Home Ritual Team. Friends are invited to call from 7 to 9 PM Sunday at the Perkins Funeral Home, 55 West Main St., Dryden, NY.
