Funeral services will be held here Thursday morning for Mr. John E. McGowan, former Brookfield mayor, who died unexpectedly, yesterday.
Mr. McGowan suffered a heart attack at a downtown service station and died at the scene. He was 76.
The Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bowden Chapel, where friends may call until the hour of services.
A funeral Mass will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
The Brookfield Elks Lodge will hold a Session of Sorrow at 8 o'clock tonight at the funeral home.
Mr. McGowan, who resided at 713 Brookfield Ave., was a lifelong resident of Brookfield and was a retired postal employee.
He was long active in community and civic work, and served as mayor of Brookfield from 1938 to 1940. He also served on the City Council.
He was a veteran of World War I and belonged to Ernest A. McNish Post 182 of the American Legion. He also held memberships in the Brookfield Elks Lodge, the Knights of Columbus, and the South Eagle Anti-Thief Association. Mr. McGowan belonged to Immaculate Conception Church.
Surviving are seven sisters, Loyola McGowan, Catherine McGowan, Agnes McGowan, Josephine Dooley, Mrs. Mary Howk and Mrs. Veronica Doran, Brookfield; and Mrs. Anna Burns, Kansas City; and several nieces and nephews.
