In March 1944, it was noted in the same newspaper in Joplin, that he had been promoted to Technical Sergeant for the Marine Corps at Mojave.

His engagement to Joanne announced:
Mrs. J. Frank Walker of Sagmount announces the engagement of her daughter, Joanne Estelle, to Arthur Raymond Chaves of Joplin. Miss Walker, who is a daughter of the late J. Frank Walker, is a graduate of Joplin high school and attended the University of Southern California and the University of Missouri. She was affiliated with Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Mr. Chaves is a graduate of Joplin high school and attended Joplin Junior college and the University of Chicago and received a degree from Missouri university. He spent three years in the Marine Corps, including 18 months in the Southwest Pacific. No date has been announced for the wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Arthur R. Chaves, formerly of Sagmount, have moved to West Hollywood, Calif., and are at home at 8716 El Tovar. Mrs. Chaves is the former Miss Joanne Walker and is a daughter of Mrs. J. Frank Walker and the late Mr. Walker. Mr. Chaves is a grandson of Mrs. Mary Chaves.

In September 1951, a photo appeared in the Joplin newspaper, of Joanne and her 5-month old daughter, Cheryl, noting that they were from Westwood, California, and had returned to visit her mother, with Joanne's husband accompanying them.
