Dr. Lowell Kearl, a local physician, and former Lodi vineyard owner died Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at the age of 97.

After relocating from Los Angeles, California to Stockton in 1970, Dr. Kearl practiced anesthesiology at Oak Park and San Joaquin General Hospitals before moving to Lodi in 1977. He retired from medicine in 1983. In addition to his 43-year medical career, Dr. Kearl had a lifetime passion for gardening and farming. For nearly twenty years, he cultivated his Lodi vineyard and cherry orchard, Kearl Farms, until his health would no longer permit. After the sale of Kearl Farms, he moved to a new Lodi home in 1977. A special 90th birthday celebration was held in 2000 at Lodi's Hutchins Square. A large number of family members and friends from throughout the country attended.

Dr. Kearl died in Lodi. The onset of advanced age and deteriorating physical condition, complicated by several leg operations to remove aneurisms, confined him to a local managed care facility. Circulatory problems in the left leg eventually resulted in its removal. He simply defied death for quite some time, but he never lost his strong faith, sense of humor and love for people.

Dr. Kearl was born April 18, 1910 in a one-room log house on the family sheep ranch in northern Utah. He grew up on the ranch as the youngest child in a large family. A rancher's most valued assets are his children, and Lowell was needed to do the work at a very young age. He herded sheep, drove teams of horses, milked cows and labored in the hay fields. Lowell attended a high school of fifteen students and as a descendent of early Mormon pioneers, his church was an important part of his family life. His father reluctantly allowed him to leave the ranch for a college education at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. There he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ethel Callison in 1933. Dr. Kearl continued with his college education and sheep herding until 1937 when he moved his wife and infant son to Los Angeles to attend medical school. Remaining in Southern California, Lowell practiced family medicine and anesthesiology while he and Mary Ethel raised four children to adulthood. Mary Ethel died from cancer in 1964. Subsequently, Lowell married Raquel Jara Olalde, a registered nurse, and they moved from Los Angeles shortly thereafter. Lowell taught his children by example the value of work, education and service to others. He taught us all about faith and courage in the face of personal adversity. The family wishes to thank Arbor Convalescent Home for their professional care and loving concern for our Lowell the past several years.

Dr. Kearl enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, reading books on history, religion and biographies, writing poetry and humoring those around him. He served decades as a teacher, speaker and lay minister with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including seven years as a Bishop and 17 years on the Church High Council in Glendale, California area. He was a member of Lodi's Third Ward where he often taught Sunday school classes.

Raquel, his wife of 43 years; his sons, Gordon Kearl of Show Low, Arizona and Dr. Sherman Kearl of Las Vegas, Nevada; daughters, Cathy Hansen of Oregon City, Oregon and Mary Jane Leonhardi of Catalina Island, California survive Lowell. Stepchildren, Terri Pinillos of Lodi and Hernan Augusto of Elk Grove, twenty-three grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren also survive him.
