BELER, LT. COL. JOE H. was born March 18, 1918 in McAlester, Oklahoma, to Charles Estel and Lalla Smith Beler. He died on July 10 at his Dallas, home. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Jean Larimore Beler; and many others.

After graduation from McAlester High School in 1935, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps to get an education in radio and then set up a radio service. This was the beginning of a long and outstanding career in communications and electronics. In WWII Joe was given more responsibilities and he was on the leading edge in communications, electronics, air traffic control, weather distribution, and special programs and procedures. He refined HFR Direction Finding across the North Atlantic during WWII. He improved distribution of current weather information in support of tactical operations in Europe. He was a senior advisor to the State Department and commercial airlines during the rapid deployment of aviation in Europe and was a major contributor to communications and air traffic control of the Berlin Airlift. He was responsible for setting up, operating, and transfer of a technical training school for the West German Air Force after Germany was awarded it's sovereignty in 1954. Subsequently, he was ordered Strategic Air Command Headquarters at Offutt Air Force Base at Omaha, Nebraska. He was placed in charged of all operations of all airborne and ground communications and electronics; the development of communications support of the Airborne Command Post, Airborne Alert, and development of SAC's Utilization of HF Radio Single Sideband Radio throughout the fleet. He retired from the United States Air Force in 1960 as a Lt. Col. after 20 years but continued in the Reserves as a Colonel. He retired again in 1980 after 20 years employment Collins Radio Company which became Rockwell International. Since his retirement in 1980 he has intermittently served as consultant with the president of two companies. He participated part-time in registration at the Dallas Convention Center and the Dallas Market Center at their major shows. He has been an active Amateur Radio Operator since first being licensed about 50 years ago. He has held the top-class License (EXTRA) since they were initially offered in April, 1952, with a call sign of W5JB. He is a Life Member of the American Radio relay League, the "Ham Fraternity." He is a member of the Masonic Lodge #96, AF, and AM in McAlester, Oklahoma; an 32nd degree Mason in the Dallas Scottish Rite Bodies and the Hella Shrine Temple in Garland. He had been active in the Legion of Honor and has twice served as President of the Top O'Dallas Shrine Club. Honorary Pallbearers are Ray Sensney, Jim Renfro, John Simon, Ralph Williams, Bill Rambin, Bob Smith, and Cliff Wilton.

A memorial service will be held at Restland Memorial Chapel, Greenville Avenue at Restland Road, Monday, July 12, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. Family visitation Sunday, July 11, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at Restland Funeral Home.
