He was born July 21, 1934 in West Salem, IL, the son of Rudy & Zella (Marks) Burton. Joe graduated from Assumption High School in 1953. He had moved to Assumption at age 2, then lived in Moweaqua, and had lived in Pana since 1987. Joe worked at Illinois Power Company and after retiring from there, owned and operated Schmahl & Burton Amoco Station in Moweaqua, and then B & B Equipment Oil Field Services, where he had the honor and privilege of working alongside his sons as they became young adults and later his son-in-law.
He always had a mechanic's heart & mind, and from an early age was always building and rebuilding any machinery and engines he could get his hands on. While his sons were young, he also enjoyed raising and training their palomino horses. Later on, he enjoyed traveling, NASCAR, having daily coffee with his Assumption & Moweaqua buddies, and spending time with his grandsons and watching their sports and activities. He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church, Pana.
