Ozzie entered peacefully into rest on June 7, 2007, in San Jose, CA, at the age of 89. He was born in Johnsville, Arkansas, on October 23, 1917, later relocating to Farmville (of Warren), Trafalgar, and Snyder, Arkansas. He had been a 66-year resident of California. Following his Army discharge in December 1945, he and his new family (a wife and daughter) bought and resided in San Bruno for 6 years and then in San Jose (for 55 years). He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawson and Mary J. (Bell) Ozment of Warren, AR, and six of his siblings: Clyde, Claude (Buddy), Dewell, Marjorie (Margie) Bryant, Anna Belle Powers, and Alma Francke.

Ozzie had been a farmhand (-1932), a farmer of cotton, sorghum, and vegetables (1932-1933), a sharecropper (1933-1941), and a whiskey distiller (-1933) with his family, while also competing financially and innovatively with his father’s farming profits and methodology; a WPA worker (1935); a CCC worker (1936-39); a farmer of his own crops on rented land, while also a haymaker for family and neighbors (1939-41); a four-year Army veteran of World War II (as a decorated seaman in the Pacific Theater's Coastal Artillery, Battery A, including the USAMP Niles, mine sweeping, mine laying, and laying underwater communications cables along the West Coast, from Oct. 12, 1941 to Dec. 15, 1945); a postwar Army truck driver (S. F. to Oakland, 1945-46); a foundryman (with Cochin Brakes in San Bruno); a Fuller Brush man; a helper in manufacturing air compressors; a machinist of ordnance (with Food Machinery in San Jose, 1952-56); a milling machinist of artificial limb components (with Hosmer-Dorrance / American Hospital Supply, 1956-79); and a 29-year square dancer (with the Dudes and Dolls and the Mavericks in San Jose, 1964-93).

On July 25, 1943, he wed at Fort Scott's Post Chapel to his Presidio sweetheart (as of their June 12, 1942, blind date at her home), a San Francisco native and restaurateur’s daughter. Ozzie enjoyed being a consummate handyman, having both learned and taught himself the various disciplines of car and home repair and improvement. He was seldom shy and usually conveyed his sense of humor, knowledge, and helpfulness. A man of character, caring, and the common touch, Ozzie will be deeply missed by Beryl, his wife of nearly 64 years; his daughter, Sharon Hermen (and her husband, Wayne); his son, John (and his wife, Zita); his brother Lavelle; his sister Idell Craig; his grandchildren, Mark Hermen (and his wife, Cindy), Lisa and Teri Hermen, and Gregory and Kenneth Ozment; and by his great-grandchildren, Joseph and Hailey Hermen.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 11, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Darling & Fischer Campbell Memorial Chapel, 231 E. Campbell, Ave., Campbell, CA. A graveside service with full military honors will follow on Tuesday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at Los Gatos Memorial Park, 2255 Los Gatos-Almaden Road, San Jose, in the Veterans Section with Elder Mark Hermen presiding.
