Lee Countian, 58, Drowned While Fishing

Beattyville, Ky., Jul. 16 - Sherman Napier, 48, (65) Lee Co., Ky. merchant, farmer & coal dealer, was drowned Thursday afternoon while fishing on the north fork of the Kentucky River near Athol. Lee Co.

Sheriff Shelby Kincaid, who recovered the body early this morning, said Napier & a small boy were fishing from a flat rock jutting out into the river. When the boy attempted to change his position, his feet slipped from under him & he fell into the river. Sheriff Kincaid quoted the boy as saying that Napier plunged in after him, pushed him to safety & disappeared beneath the water.

After dragging the river for some six hours, Sheriff Kincaid said the body was recovered a short distance from where it went into the water.

Among the survivors are three sisters, Mrs. Tom Spencer, Athol; Mrs. Holt Shackelford, Breathitt Co., & Miss Florence Napier, Athol; one brother, Walter Napier, Lone, & his father, William Napier, Tallega.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at the Napier Cemetery near Athol.
