Obituary for Mark A. Cheatham

Mark A. Cheatham, 50 years of Monroe, MI, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 7, 2013 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI

Born October 23, 1963 in Monroe, Mark was the son of the late Andre Wood and Sophia (Dafney) Briggs. Mark attended Monroe Public Schools and was a 1981 graduate of Monroe High School. Mark furthered his education by attending Eastern Michigan University.

Mark served his country honorably and proudly, first as a Marine Reservist and then by joining the U.S. Army where he served overseas, mainly in Germany.

Mark worked for Macomb Residential Opportunity (MRO) in Monroe and as a substitute teacher in Monroe County. Mark also coached extensively throughout Southeast Michigan and for Ford - Madison Sports.

Mark was very athletic and excelled in track. He ran track for Monroe High School, Eastern Michigan University and in the U.S. Army.

Mark enjoyed coaching and working with children. Mark will be remembered as always having a smile on his face and willing to listen to anyone who was in need of a friendly shoulder to lean on. More than anything Mark loved family.

Mark is survived by nine cherished children: Thomas Cheatham, II, Mitayel Payne, Aaron Cheatham, Devin Cheatham, Delea (David) Huggins, Flemea (Michael) Farris, A1C Jalisa Cheatham, USAF, Andrea Cheatham and Maria Jenkins, five treasured grandchildren, five siblings: James (Judy) Briggs, Alexis Braggs, Christopher (Rachael) Briggs, (Andre) Patty Wood and Charles Briggs. Also surviving are a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death four siblings: Willie Mae Briggs – Thomas, Linda Briggs – Watts, and Andrew and Roy Briggs.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8 PM in the Bacarella Funeral Home, 1201 S. Telegraph Rd, Monroe, MI 48161 where funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Friday, November 15, 2013 at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Lito Mendez, of Monroe Full Gospel Church will officiate. Interment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, where the VFW. Post 1138 will conduct military honors.
