December 27, Final Rites held here for mother 42, hit by train.
Funeral service were held from St. Mark's Lutheran Church Monday Afternoon for Mrs. Schumann, 42 year year old Sulphur Springs housewife and mother of two children who died Friday night when she was struck by the east bound Hawkeye Limited passenger train.
The train's engineer told Sheriff Harry Dreyer that Mrs. Schumann was walking toward Sulphur Springs when the diesel locomotive struck her and tossed her 40 feet down the embankment. The engineer said he sounded the train's horn when he saw her in the headlight, but that she did not appear to see or hear the train.
The tragedy, second train accident in this area in less than a week occurred about half mile east of Sulphur Springs. Mrs. Schumann was walking toward Sulphur Springs apparently returning home. Dr. J.A.Cornish, Buena Vista coroner who investigated the accident with Sheriff Dreyer, said evidently died instantly of multiple fractures, Sheriff said it appeared that practically every bone in her body was broke.
Surviving Mrs. Schumann are her husband custodian at Providence Consolidated School in Sulphur Springs, and two daughters Susan Kay at home and Mrs. Don Myers.

Lois Jeanette Schumann, daughter of John and Phoebe Ricke, now deceased, was born November 1, 1913 at Greenville Iowa. She became a child of God on Pentecost Sunday, June 6, 1954 by the sacrament of holy baptism in St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Storm Lake. She met her death Friday evening December 23, 1955, at which time she was 42 years, 1 month, 23 days of age. Burial was in Varina Cemetery. She was united in marriage to Merle Clyde Schumann on October 10, 1930 and to this marriage two children were born. For the past years Mr. and Mrs. Schumann and family lived in the community of Sulphur Springs.
Those who were mourning her passing are her husband, Merle: two daughters, Mrs. Joan Myers and Susan Kay Schumann, two grandsons Robert and John Myers, all of Sulphur Springs. Two brothers Glenn and John Ricke, Jr., both of San Mateo, California, three sisters: Mrs. Ed Fitzgerald (Lorie), Mrs. Wayne Ziegler (Irene), of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mrs. Russell Spavin (Marian), of Mesa, Arizona, and many other relatives and friends.
