Norman Bartmess, 85, of Kennett, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004 at Twin Rivers Regional Medical Center in Kennett. Born on March 11, 1918, in Malden, Mo., a son of the late Pell and Mary Pemberton Bartmess, he was a veteran of the Army and Air Force and served in World War II. He was a former manager of Kennett Cotton Seed and Oil Mill, a member of Boy Scouts of America, Southeast Missouri Council, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, S.J. USA, 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Grand Lodge A.F. and A.M. of Missouri, member of the First United Methodist Church, founding member of the Kennett Country Club, and a member of the Kennett Chamber of Commerce.
Outside of managing the mill and the city council, he was involved with organizations that he believed in. He was a Shriner, where he supported the annual circus in St. Louis. He was involved with the Boy Scouts of America at the District Level. Professional organizations included Dunklin County Memorial Hospital Board, Interim Administrator, president of the Mississippi Valley Oilseed Processors Association twice, delegate to the National Cotton Council, chairman of the United States Agriculture Laboratory for cottonseed processing in New Orleans for 20 years, served on the Kennett City Council for 16 years during which he was mayor pro-tem, finance chairman, and council liaison to the city light and water board.
On June 27, 1952 he married Joann Scales, who survives of the home.
Other survivors include, three sons, Breck Bartmess and wife, Denise of Poplar Bluff, Mo., Joe Bartmess and wife, Erin of Wildwood, Mo., and Keith Bartmess of Fort Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren, Amy, Sam, Samantha, Christopher, Cameron, J.P., Leah and Austin Bartmess and four nephews, William B. and Robert Gillespie and Thomas and Matt Scales.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until time of services on Thursday, Feb. 12. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 12 at the McDaniel Chapel with Rev. Paul Lanning officiating. Burial will be at the Memorial Gardens in Kennett. Pallbearers will be Thomas Scales, J.P. Bartmess, Gene Williams, Mark Pelts, Patrick McHaney, and Ward Billings.
