I believe in the 1880 census those children listed after her [Mary Hooks] are actually her little brothers and sisters, and are mistakenly listed as Hooks on the census. I've got them in my family tree as children of Andrew Starnes & Eliza Hemby: Andrew F. Starnes (1862-1944), Martha Emma Starnes (c. 1864-?, Mrs. John Alexander Haywood), and Elizabeth B. "Bettie" Starnes (1866-1907, Mrs. Nathan Charles Burns).

With regard to Mary, she married William J. Hooks on 21 Nov. 1861, as you said. They had three children: Robert Eli Hooks (1862-1941), Madison Hooks (1866-1936) and Mary Jane Hooks (1868-1945, Mrs. James Franklin Foard). The sons went to Alabama and Robert ended up in Oklahoma. Mary Jane remained in NC.

I've got in my notes on Mary C. "The Union County Home for the Aged and Infirm (the poorhouse) records state that on 24 May 1871, Mary Hooks, age 24, admitted as insane. Apparently she was out by 1880 and living with her parents." Apparently, William J. Hooks divorced her, and was remarried to a woman named Josephine Alexander. I find him in the 1880 census in Henry Co., Georgia, with wife Josephine, children Robert E., 15, and "Mattison" (Madison), 12, and Anna M., 2, and Josephine's sister, Fannie Alexander.

Mary Jane Hooks was living with her aunt, her father's sister, Jane Hooks Stillwell, in Union Co., NC in 1880. And Mary Starnes Hooks was living with her parents Andrew & Eliza Hemby Starnes in 1880.
