Thomas Altemeier dies at 48; was family doctor, 'U' teacher

Thomas M. Altemeier was the kind of doctor who had time to listen to his patients and to his former medical students.

He loved working with the elderly, and his former students at the University of Minnesota Medical School more often called him mentor than professor. Altemeier died Thursday after a long illness. He was 48.

"He liked to help people," said his wife, Marjean Altemeier, of St. Louis Park. "He was a giver. He would take the time to sit and talk with his students about their personal lives and what their niche might be in medicine."

Altemeier taught at the University of Minnesota Medical School from 1979 to 1985 and supervised a program for residents studying to become family practice doctors.

"He just wanted us all to be the best that we could be, and to continue to learn and grow," said Kathryn Gilbertson, a nurse practitioner who worked with Altemeier. "He was a natural teacher." "

In 1986, he joined Bethesda Lutheran Hospital and Rehabilitation Center and helped direct nursing home services and a clinic for the elderly. He also was president of the Minnesota Association of Medical Directors of Nursing Homes and Physicians. He retired in April.

"As he practiced, he grew more and more devoted to elderly patients," his wife said. "He liked to sit and visit with them and find out their history."

He grew up in Newton, Iowa, and graduated from Luther College in 1967. He turned down an offer to play professional football with the Kansas City Chiefs and chose to study medicine at the University of Iowa, his wife said. He practiced family medicine in Des Moines and Iowa Falls before moving to Minnesota.

Altemeier is also survived by a teenaged son, John, and two sisters, Marjorie Valentine, of Niles Mich., and Karen Oliver, of Cincinnati. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 24 at the First Unitarian Society in Minneapolis.
