Affectionately called Poppy by his grand children. He was a very tall man with a bass voice and sang very well. He married Ella Mae McKinney and they were parents of Zona, Pauline, Ruby, Nellie Irene, Erma, James Bernard, Edward Ferrell, Herbert, Carrie, and Ruth Yvonne.
He worked in the mines in Southern West Virginia to raise his family. He loved the outdoors and gardening. One of his favorite things to do was sing to the top of his voice while working in his garden.
