Peggy Setzer Mowery, 85, of Saluda died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, in Pardee Hospital.
She was born in Hickory, a daughter of the late John Milton Setzer and Margaret Anne Rhyne Setzer. She was a graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College and pursued graduate studies in library science at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
She married Bob Lee Mowery of Salisbury in 1945. She resumed her career as a high school librarian in DeLand, Fla., where her husband was a university librarian. A lifelong Lutheran, she was an active member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Hendersonville, serving in many volunteer capacities. During her retirement, she also was a regular volunteer at Pardee Hospital and with the FISH program, and was an avid bridge player.
Her husband preceded her in death in 1995. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rix; her son, Robert; and her devoted companion, Harley.
She is survived by her children, Holly Paul of Oak Park, Ill., Mary Mowery and Frank Sia of Saluda and Frank Mowery of Washington, D.C.; a sister, Jeanne Taylor of Hickory; a brother, Roux Setzer of Hickory; and her grandchildren, Sara Stephens, Michael and David Mowery and Sandy and Timothy Paul.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the World Wildlife Fund (Donations WB), Avenue duMont-Blanc, 1195 Gland, Switzerland; WNC Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, 31 College Place, Suite D 320, Asheville, N.C. 28801; or the Southern Poverty Law Center, Special Gifts Coordinator, 400 Washington Ave., Montgomery, Ala. 36104.
