CONOVER - Virginia Jones Rockett, 89, formerly of Conover, passed away Saturday, Aug. 26, 2006, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born June 23, 1917, in Catawba County to the late John and Anna Howard Jones. She was a lifelong and faithful member of Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Conover. She was active in the Women's Guild and served as a nursery teacher. She and her husband, Thomas "Tommy" Rockett, owned and operated Rockett Shell Service Station in Conover for many years. After their retirement, they remained active in the community, delivering Meals on Wheels and also serving as housekeeper and custodian of Trinity Reformed Church of Christ. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Thomas M. "Tommy" Rockett; and sisters, Louise Moose, Johnsie Carpenter and Elsie Drum. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Julia and Keith Grubbs of Conover; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Tera Rockett of Newton; a grandson, Scott Grubbs of Conover; a sister, Anna Lee Clodfelter of Troutman; and a number of nieces and nephews. A Service of Remembrance will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Conover, with the Rev. Peggy Stout and Chaplain Larry Bolick officiating. A private graveside service will be held at Conover City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, 2006, at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. The family gratefully acknowledges the care she received while in residence at Carillon Assisted Living in Newton and Abernethy Laurels in Newton. Memorials may be made to Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, N.C., Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 217 Second Ave., NE, Conover, or the Abernethy Laurels, Leonard Avenue, Newton, N.C.
