Gladys Ethel Achter, 91, of Breckenridge and formerly of Wahpeton, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge. She was born June 11, 1910, to Frank and Hilma (Eklund) Johnson near Clitherall in Leaf Mountain Township. She grew up in the Clitherall area and attended rural schools near Clitherall. She later attended a business school in Minneapolis. She operated a restaurant in Wahpeton with her sister, Irene Parton. On Oct. 20, 1941, she married Clarence Achter in Fergus Falls. During World War II, she worked in St. Paul. She worked for almost 20 years for Sam Farlow at Farlow’s Ladies Ready to Wear in Wahpeton and later for Eva Kelly at Eva’s. Mr. Achter died Dec. 6, 1991. Mrs. Achter moved to Apple Tree Court in Breckenridge and later to St. Francis Nursing Home. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Wahpeton, Christian Mothers, VFW Auxiliary and did volunteer work for the American Cancer Society. She enjoyed spending time at the lakes with her husband and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter Pam; four brothers, Willie, Lawrence, Fernal and Rudolph; three sisters, Mabel Wallevand, Myrtle Carter and Irene Parton; and three infant brothers and sisters. She is survived by her son-in-law Gary Boutiette and granddaughter Christine.
