Found in The State 21 October 2012: COLUMBIA-Funeral service for Francis William "Bill" LaMotte Jr., 68, will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 22, 2012, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Sunday October 21, 2012 at 815 Woodland Drive. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel is assisting the family.

Found in The State 22 October 2012: COLUMBIA - Francis William (Bill) LaMotte, Jr. died at his home on October 20, 2012 surrounded by his wife and children after a courageous battle with brain cancer. Born June 21, 1944 in Columbia, South Carolina, Bill was the of son of Dorothy Hagood Cantey LaMotte and Francis William LaMotte, Sr. He attended Brennen Elementary, Hand Middle and graduated from Dreher High School in 1962 where he lettered in football and baseball and was selected to play in the North vs. South All-Star Football game. Upon entering the University of South Carolina, Bill was offered football and baseball scholarships; however, he ultimately chose a baseball scholarship and lettered for four years serving as co-captain his senior year.

While at the University, Bill participated in the NROTC program and received the Rex Enright Award for the outstanding senior athlete in the ROTC program. He also was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and Beaux Arts Society in addition to many other affiliations. Bill graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science degree and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps. He later received his Masters in Business Administration degree from USC. He also attended Georgetown University in Washington, DC with studies in Insurance and General Securities Training. He was a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps and served meritoriously in Viet Nam as an acting Company Commander and Battalion Intelligence Officer. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Award with Combat "V" along with many other awards. While stationed in Washington, D.C. he was part of 8th and I Division, and served proudly in that capacity. He continued his loyal support of the U.S. Marine Corps all his life by serving as President, Board member, and fundraiser for the USC ROTC Alumni Association, and was named Admiral of the Year in 2001 by the University NROTC. Bill’s diligent efforts of fundraising provided scholarships for many out of state students who have gone on to proudly serve our country in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps.

Bill enjoyed a 25 year career as a financial advisor with Merrell Lynch and A.G. Ed-wards. He was dedicated to the many clients he served over the years and developed many lifelong friendships with coworkers and clients alike. Most recently, Bill devoted his efforts to fundraising as director of Development for the College of Engineering and Computing at the University of South Carolina. He had a special attachment to that particular college as his grandfather, Asbury Gamewell LaMotte, was a graduate and served as local architect of the Capitol after the Civil War.

Bill was a loving husband, devoted father, doting grandfather, and dedicated uncle to each of his nieces and nephews. He is survived by his wife of forty-four years Paula Speight LaMotte, and three children: Francis William LaMotte, III and his wife Caroline Brady LaMotte, Paula Speight LaMotte Peacock and her husband Thomas Harold Peacock, and James Rawlings Brewer LaMotte and his wife Melony Finger LaMotte. Bill leaves seven adoring grandchildren: Caroline Carter and Francis Brewer LaMotte; Anna Francis, Charlotte (Lottie) Elizabeth, and Lucinda (Lucy) Louise Peacock; and James Rawlings Brewer and Leyton Elliott LaMotte. Bill was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Louise Cantey Hasell. He is survived by his sister Francis Golladay LaMotte Robinson and brother-in-law Frank Elliott Robinson II, his brother John Manning Cantey and sister-in-law Elizabeth Hazlehurst Cantey, and his brother-in-law Charles Norman Speight, Jr. and his wife Susan Russell Speight. Bill is also survived by the following nieces and nephews: Rhett Hagood Hasell (Pam), Cantey Hasell McDonald (Eric), LaMotte Thorn Hasell, John Childs Hasell, John Manning Cantey, Jr. (Hunter), William Hazlehurst Cantey (Lisa), Eliza-beth Cantey Rhodes (Vincent), Thomas Mikell Cantey (Christi-na), Frank Elliott Robinson III (Katherine), Dorothy Robinson Boudreaux (Beau), Stacey Speight Wiley (Bobby), Christi-na Dawne Speight Perry (Todd), Charles Norman (Laddie) Speight III, Marks McInnis Speight, and Benjamin Carpenter Speight. He was predeceased by his nephew Hayne Gadsden Hasell. Bill had numerous great nieces and nephews of whom he often spoke and who he adored.

Bill was a faithful lifelong member of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, member of numerous Bible study groups, loyal member of the Sunday School Class "Growing in Christ," Usher Team Captain, Youth Group leader, fundraiser in the Annual Fund Drive, and participant in the Boy Scout and Alpha Programs. His charge was to encourage his children to strengthen their faith, and he led by example. He was a man of faith and a friend to all throughout the years.

Bill was a past President and Board member of the Columbia Kiwanis Club, a Board member of the Columbia Chapter US Navy League, a Past President and Board member as well as coach for the Palmetto Baseball League, a Past Board member of Historic Columbia Foundation, a Board member for the Midlands Human Resources Development Commission, and a graduate of Leadership Columbia. Bill and Paula enjoyed being members of Forest Lake Country Club, The Dance Club, and the Flamenco Club.

Inscribed in Bill’s father’s Bible by his mother in 1910 is the following: "Foremost among all thy studies, I bid thee learn Christ faith by heart." This was and continues to be Bill’s charge to his children and grandchildren.

There was a visitation at the LaMotte home, 815 Woodland Drive, on Sunday, October 21. The funeral will be at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral on Monday, October 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery with full military honors. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.

Pallbearers include William Francis Coleman, Hal Holland Crosswell, Jr., Judson Davie DeRamus, Charles Henry Duke III, Thomas Chiles Griffin, Jr., Ben Gibbs Leaphart, Peter Brabant Millichap, Thomas Morgan, Edward Olin Pendarvis, Jr., Ronald Henderson Rentz, Bachman Shirer Smith III, William Barber Sykes, Jr., and William Ray Weston, Jr. Honorary pallbearers include USC Naval ROTC and the Columbia Kiwanis Club.

Officiating the services will be The Very Reverend Timothy Jones, The Reverend Susan B. Heath, The Reverend Charles M. Davis, Sr., The Reverend Charles M. Davis, Jr., and The Reverend John Hunter LaMotte. Cross Bearer will be Carolina Matthews accompanied by acolytes Braxton Clark, Reid and George Folline, and Tally Moorman, all of whom have special connection to the LaMotte family.

On Sunday, October 28th, our daughter, Bunny Peacock will be running the Marine Corps Marathon in honor of her father to raise money for brain cancer research. Donations may be made to 2012 Marine Crops Marathon, c/o Paula (Bunny) Peacock, 1403 West-minster Drive, Columbia, South Carolina, 29204. Please pray for her next Sunday as she crosses the finish line for her father and so many others who suffer from this disease.
