Mr. John Irby Gholson Sr. "Derby," 86, of 14801 Madison Road, DeWitt, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2005, at the Walnut Hill Convalescent Center. He was a native of Dinwiddie County and the son of the late John and Essie Parker Gholson.
He was married to Ruth Rebecca Morgan Gholson. At an early age, he joined the Eleven Oaks Baptist Church, DeWitt. He was a retired employee of the Paracrete Concrete Company. He was predeceased by his daughter, Victoria Gholson Weaver; four brothers, Clarence R. Gholson, Alfonia Gholson, Berkley Gholson and Willie Gholson (twin); three sisters, Exxie Crenshaw, Sadie Bose and Otelia Bryant; and an aunt, Melrose Wallace Johnson.
He leaves to cherish memories of him, a loving and devoted wife of over 60 years, Ruth "Beck" Gholson; a son, John I. Gholson Jr. of DeWitt; three grandsons, Theodore and Kelvin Weaver and Keith Gholson; six grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Thelma Gholson, Viola Gholson and Laura Madison of DeWitt; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005, in the chapel of the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home, McKenney, with the Rev. John C. Winbush, pastor of the Eleven Oaks Baptist Church. Burial will be in Eleven Oaks Church Cemetery. The family will assemble at 12:45 at the funeral home on the day of the service.
