December 1, 1917
Calgary, Alberta
Sergt. Gordon Carpenter, son of the late Silas H. Carpenter, many years chief of detectives in the city of Montreal and afterward of Edmonton and Banff, fell inaction on Nov. 6. Word of his death was received yesterday by his mother. Delay was caused by the message going to Banff, where the family resided, until recently. The sad news came as asurprise and the first intimation received in Ottawa was when a half-brother of the dead soldier, S. H. Carpenter, Jr., was asked by an acquaintance, if one, Sergt. Gordon Carpenter at the front, was any relation. It then developed that the telegram telling of the death had been sent to the west. Sergt. Carpenter went overseas with a unit from Calgary and prior to enlisting as a student at the Calgary High school. He was born in Montreal nineteen years ago.
