Shongaloo, LA - Georgia Porter Lusby Branton passed away at home in Shongloo, LA on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the age of 92 from heart complications. She lived a vivacious life. Georgia is predeceased by her husband, Parey P. Branton, her father, Owen Lusby, her mother, Lena Williams Lusby, her sister, Wanda Lusby Collins and her brother, Alvin Lusby.
Georgia is lovingly remembered by her sons, Parey "Pepper" Branton, Jr. of Shongaloo, LA and Daniel "Champ" Branton, daughter-in-law, Renee Brazzel Branton, grandson Carson-Daniel Lusby Branton and granddaughter, Scarlett Gia Branton of Ruston, LA and sister-in-law Elsie Branton of New Caney, Texas and beloved nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
Georgia Porter Lusby was born in Avon, Kentucky on March 20, 1921. She graduated from Oxford High School in Oxford, Kentucky. She married Parey Branton in Paris, Kentucky on October 30, 1943 and was his loving and devoted wife for 68 years. During her able years, she was a tireless worker and Sunday school teacher at Mt. Paran Baptist Church. During her life she operated several small independent businesses involving farming, cattle, oil, timber and a grocery store, including a beauty shop, where she worked as a beautician for 30 years until she retired at age 50. She devoted the rest her life to her historic home, civic projects, and loving her friends and family.
During the last several years, she was supportive of the American indian tradition.Through her efforts, she helped educate the Lakota Indian children of South Dakota.
Georgia and Parey Branton bought the Bond house in Shongaloo, LA. The home was built in 1909 and in 1972, she opened the house after its renovation. She kept a guest book filled with names of friends, family and heads of state from near and far. She enjoyed every minute speaking about the history of the house and serving up her special southern hospitality. Georgia was a very descriptive and great story teller, and she loved to set the stage for family and friends with interesting artifacts and beautiful flowers.
Georgia's caring, hardworking nature translated into years of volunteer service, including managing the Village of Shongaloo's Civic Center, Shongaloo's Bi-Centennial Log Cabin Project and other civic duties.
Family and friends were Georgia's passion and delight. She had a unique gift to recognize and appreciate the talents in others and to make them feel loved and lifted by her presence. Georgia was like a grandmother to all who entered her home. She loved having company and being a good friend.
Two of Georgia's greatest joys in her life were her grandchildren, Carson and Scarlett. She never dreamed she would be a grandmother at the age of 80 or of the love and pride she would feel for them. She cherished their Sunday afternoon visits. Her happiness at being with them spilled into delicious homemade tacos, loving talks and sweet cuddles.
Georgia Branton will be remembered by her family and friends as a graceful, thoughtful, eloquent and loving person.
Visitation will be held at Bailey Funeral Home, Springhill, LA on Monday, November 4, 2013 from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M.
The funeral service will be held at Mt. Paran Baptist Church, Shongaloo, LA at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, November 5, 2013 with Dr. Johnie Adkins, Jr. officiating and Bro. Jason Lupo assisting. Interment to follow at Union Springs Cemetery in Shongaloo.
Serving as pallbearers will be Randy Frye, Dan Festervan, Doug Black, Ronny Martin, John Ward Woodson, and Ray Thompson. Honorary pallbearer will be Henry Lee Burns.
