Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, and after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
He was born on Nov. 25, 1913, in Dubuque, son of Carl and Bertha (Sommer) Bremer.
Herbert graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1931. As a young man he worked at the E.L. Scheppele Jewelers, where he learned to repair clocks. He later began at Home Supply Home Furnishings. He left in 1942 to serve with the Army Air Force in World War II.
Herbert returned in 1946 and married Olive Conrad on Nov. 16, 1946, at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ. Olive and Herbert spent 55 loving years together.
Herbert worked at Meyer- Pauly, former Home Supply, for more than 40 years and retired as an office manager.
He was a lifelong member at Immanuel Congregational U.C.C. Herbert sang with the choir for more than 50 years, served on various boards and committees, and taught Sunday school. His volunteer work included many years as a tax-aid counselor and serving on a nursing home care review committee. His hobbies included gardening, woodworking, music, fishing, photography, travel, golf, and he was known as a great handyman.
Herbert was a great husband, father, and grandfather whose wonderful sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Surviving are his wife, Olive (Conrad) Bremer; two daughters, Sue Loney, of Dubuque, and Ellen (Dennis) Grashorn, of Geneva, Ill.; two sons, Jim (Pam) Bremer, of Slinger, Wis., and Dave Bremer, of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Matt and Brian Loney, Erich, Kurt and Keith Grashorn, and Melissa and Sam Bremer; four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Sam Ethan and Morgan Loney; two sisters, Mary Coffee and Mildred Lukens, both of Dubuque; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, 1795 Jackson St. Dubuque, Iowa 52001.
