Emma Bernette Hamilton was born in 1853 in Seguin, Texas to William Scudder Hamilton and Louisa McIntosh Dixon. She grew up in Texas and became a dressmaker by profession.

In 1896 Emma married a widower, Richard Wilmot, a retired professional soldier. After their marriage, they followed his son-in-law and daughter, William Robert & Lillian (Wilmot) Wyatt, to Waco, Texas where Richard worked for the water department for a few years. When Richard's son, Edwin Herbert Wilmot, moved from Texas to California, they followed him there and lived out their lives in the Pasadena area. The couple had no children together.
