Alfred, along with his mother, two brothers, Heinrich and Carl and four sisters, Catharine, Maria, Frieda and Elly, all departed for the United States aboard the ship Normannia, arriving in New York on May 31, 1890, and joined their father on the farm near West Point. The surname Rahlf became Ralph in the United States.
