Alfred Heinrich Rahlf was born September 6, 1868, in Burg, Island of Fehmarn, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, the son of Nicolaus and Catharine (Tiedgen) Rahlf. His father departed by himself for the United States, arriving in 1888, and settled on a farm in Cuming County, Nebraska near West Point. Alfred, along with his mother, two brothers, Heinrich and Carl and four sisters, Catharine, Maria, Frieda and Elly, all departed for the United States aboard the ship Normannia, arriving in New York on May 31, 1890, and joined their father on the farm near West Point. The surname Rahlf became Ralph in the United States.
