Mr. Eckman was born Feb, 17, 1902, at Little Falls to Joseph and Martha Eckman. He grew up and went to school there and was married to Gertrude Jendro April 8, 1934, at Little Falls. He worked for nearly 40 years as a lineman for Northern Pacific Railroad, starting in 1928. They moved to Bemidji in 1943, and he retired in 1966. He was a member of St. Philip's Catholic Church, a lifetime member of Bemidji Moose Lodge 1452 and a member of Bemidji Elks Lodge 1052.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Edwin of Austin, Texas, and Leon Jr. and Larry of Bemidji; three daughters, Emma (Mrs. Ray) Cronemiller, Leona (Mrs. Joseph) Berge and Shirley Maltais, all of Bemidji; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Edward, and by seven brothers and three sisters.
