MURPHYSBORO -- Ruth Kerr Berry, 99, formerly of Murphysboro, passed away at 8:50 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, at the Countryside Nursing Home in Sioux City, Iowa.
She was born on Nov. 4, 1904, in Roosevelt, Okla., to Dr. Wesley Bibb Kerr and Paulina (Gideon) Kerr.
At an early age the family moved to southeast Missouri, where she attended school, graduating from Central high school in St. Louis, and attending Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau.
She moved to Murphysboro in 1942, where she resided until moving to Sioux City in 1992.
Mrs. Berry was a member of the Murphysboro United Methodist Church, and attended Grace United Methodist Church in Sioux City. She was a member and a Past Matron of the Order of Eastern Star 379 of Murphysboro, a past Worthy High Priestess of the White Shrine of Jerusalem 85, and 50-year plus member of the Royal Neighbor Camp 2122.
A favorite group was the quilters at the church. She did volunteer work for several community service activities in Murphysboro.
She married Samuel Elmer Berry on May 18, 1929. He was killed in a railway accident on April 1, 1953. She is also preceded in death by one son, Benton K. Berry.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Samuel N. and Delpha Berry of Half Moon Bay, Calif., and Gordon and Mary Berry of Sioux City, Iowa; one daughter and her husband, Marilyn and William Grigsby of Avondale, Ariz.; five grandsons; one granddaughter; one great-grandson and four great-granddaughters.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 16, 2003, at Pettett Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tena Bigham officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Friends called from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and may call today until the hour of services at the funeral home. Eastern Star services were held at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Benton K. Berry Memorial Scholarship at Southern Illinois University Foundation.
