Derek was baptized as an infant in the Methodist Church. He later joined Mercy Seat Baptist in 1986 and was excited about everything he participated in at the church. Derek was a tremendous family man, and was totally committed to the community.
Captain Martin died at St. Louis University Hospital after battling a fire at the Gravois Refrigeration Co. He and Captain Robert Bruce Morrison died while trying to rescue a trapped firefighter.
Captain Martin was born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri and was reared in St. Louis where he attended the O’Fallon Technical High School. After high school he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia.
