JOHN J. NOLAN, 81, for whom funeral services will be held tomorrow morning, followed a colorful career that included four years as a bodyguard and coachman for President Grover Cleveland.
Native of Ireland, Mr. Nolan as a young man was caretaker for the Central Park Riding academy in New York and later was a coachman for Frank Hastings, a Wall Street broker.
Mr. Nolan got his job with President Cleveland through the recommendation of Hastings. He was a coachman during the warm months and during the winter was a special police guard in the White House. Mrs. Nolan helped to care for the President's children.
Following his White House Service, Mr. Nolan was coachman in New York for Emily Post, the noted authority on etiquette. The Nolans' daughter was named for her.
Mr. Nolan wore a high-top silk hat and drove a hansom cab in New York in the early 1900's before coming to Mansfield in 1908.
In Mansfield he was employed by the old Browning Mfg. company, Aultman-Taylor company and the Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co..
Mr. Nolan died Monday at his home. Funeral High Mass will be conducted at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mansfield Catholic Cemetery.
