Lloyd Bly, 87, longtime resident of Lignite, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, in the Kenmare hospital.
Lloyd Anthony Bly was born, the youngest of nine children, to Joseph and Mabel (Richmond) Bly, on March 30, 1926, on the Bly family farm, north of Rival Town Site, Portal Township, Burke County, near Lignite. He attended grade school at Lignite Public Schools and received his secondary education at Hammond Technical School, Hammond, Ind., where he became a certified welder.
On April 4, 1945, Lloyd enlisted in the Army. He proudly served his country stateside in the fifth division. He was honorably discharged Oct. 11, 1946. Following his discharge, he taught welding at the Cast Iron Foundry Co. in Gary, Ind.
On June 11, 1947, Lloyd was united in marriage to Joy Nelson from Tomahawk, Wis. They made their home in Indiana for six years before returning to North Dakota, where they would raise their three children, Martha, Anthony and David. In 1960, they purchased the Fred Erdman Farm and raised small grains. They replaced all the farm buildings on the farmstead, even building the first brick home of Portal Township. He farmed until retirement when sons Andy and David continued the operations of the family farm.
Lloyd served on the Portal Township Board for over 20 years. He also assisted in the rebuilding of the former GTA Lignite Grain Elevator when it was lost in a fire in the 1950s. He did custom grain swathing and combining for local farmers within the Portal and Lignite area for years. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lignite until its closure, and then became a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Portal.
Lloyd had a strong interest in the North Dakota oil productions and followed the progress of new oil wells and operations in the area. He enjoyed telling his "old country stories" to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, with the ever present twinkle in his eye.
Lloyd is survived by: wife of 66 years, Joy, Lignite; children, Martha Ann (Walter) Harms, Portal, Louis Eugene Anthony "Andy" Bly, Lignite; daughter-in-law, Betty Bly, Lignite; five grandchildren, Vincent Harms, Bismarck, Loren (Stephani) Harms, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Lisa (Bradley) Van Berkom, Dickinson, Jerome Bly, Lignite, Christopher Bly, Portal; five great-grandchildren, Tricia Van Berkom, Dickinson, Brian and Hunter Harms, Wisconsin Rapids, Belle and Prairie Bly, of Saskatchewan; and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mabel Bly; a son, David Jerome Bly; granddaughter, Laura Marie Bly; and his brothers and sisters.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the St. Mary's Cemetery Fund of Lignite or to a charity of the donor's choice.
