John L. Fuller, 16, school-boy, died attempting to save Robert S. Johnson and Richard L. Coleman, 11 and 17, respectfully, school-boys, from drowning, Manchester, Georgia, February19, 1938. When the canoe in which they were riding in a pond overturned 20 feet from the bank, Robert and Coleman fell into water eight feet deep. They struggled together briefly. Fuller, who was a poor swimmer, ran 100 feet to a point on the bank opposite the boys; and removing his shoes and a sweater, he made a shallow dive; took a few strokes; and then sank at a point 15 feet from the bank. Coleman and Robert became separated; and Robert got hold of the canoe. Coleman swam to the bank and became semiconscious. A man having a pole waded toward the canoe; drew it nearer the bank; and then carried Robert, who was semiconscious, from the water. Robert and Coleman were revived. Fuller's body was recovered a half hour later, but he could not be revived.
