JEFFERSON — Melvin R. "Mike" Burlingame, age 74, of Jefferson, Ohio, passed away Friday morning, Oct. 25, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family after battling cancer the last five months.
The son of Donald and Annabelle (Stone) Burlingame, he was born Jan. 29, 1939, in Jefferson and has been a lifelong resident. He was a 1959 graduate of Jefferson High School. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany for 18 months during the Vietnam Era. He was married to Carole Tamas, the love of his life, on Jan. 19, 1979.
Mr. Burlingame was employed at the Jefferson Welds General Electric Plant for over 19 years until their closing in 1984. He was then employed at Hasco Spring Co., retiring after 16 years due to bad health.
Mr. Burlingame enjoyed being with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His hobbies included cooking, baking, camping, and going to the Cleveland Indians and Browns games. He enjoyed working in his yard, gardening and remodeling his home. For four years, he and Carole hosted the GE picnics at their home, socializing with all their friends and co-workers.
He is survived by his wife, Carole; two sons, Clark (Kimberly) Burlingame and Bryan Burlingame, and a daughter, Candy Shook, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren, Ronald (Karolina) of Parma, Brandy (Sammy) Torres of Ashtabula, Amber Shook (fiancé, Mike Miller) of Geneva, Stephanie (Eliezer) Vazquez of Ashtabula and Clark Jr. and Cheyenne Burlingame, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; two step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Roscoe (Nancy) Burlingame; four sisters, Sanna (Frank) Slanina, Donna Stowe, Betty (Keith Rippons) Reuschling and Annabele (Bill) Clark; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ellouise at birth; niece Roxanne Brown; brother-in-law, Ted Stowe; and nephew, Randy Burlingame.
Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 28th, at the Jefferson Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS AND CREMATORY, INC., 49 W. Jefferson St., Jefferson, with Alisa Nierzejewski as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakdale Cemetery with Dewey Howlett Post #103 of the American Legion offering Military Honors.
Calling Hours will be held Sunday, Oct. 27th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
