Obituary:
Winifred Ellen Carlson Winifred Ellen Carlson went home to be with her Lord in the early hours of February 4, 2013 at the tender age of 98. Miss Carlson was the eldest of eight children and was born to David and Ellen Jacobson Carlson in the small town of Elroy, TX on June 19, 1914. Winifred moved to Austin with her family in the mid 1930's to seek a life away from the family farm. She soon found a job tending dorms at the University of Texas at Austin in 1936. Starting as a housekeeper she remained at the University until her retirement 40 years later earning many awards for distinguished service to the University and her profession along the way. She eventually earned the title of Director of Housekeeping; a position that was created especially for her. Not long after moving to Austin, the Carlson family settled into a home on West 37th street. The family joined the congregation of the nearby Hyde Park Baptist Church, where Winifred remained an active and faithful member until the time of her death. She is remembered by many of the children who grew up in Hyde Park through her teaching of the primary grades in Sunday School for 30 years. Winifred was preceded in death by her father, David Alec Carlson, her mother, Ellen Mathilda Jacobson Carlson, whom she lovingly cared for many years in the family home, her sisters, Anna Lee Reneau, Irene Carlson, Naomi Jacobson, and Victoria Elliott, as well as her brother, Oliver Carlson, and brothers-in-law, Kerns Elliott and Milton Jacobson, all of Austin. She is survived by her sisters, Gladys Hirst and Mary Elaine Carlson, of Austin, and Laverne Morrison of Lake Orion, MI, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Many thanks also go to her wonderful care giver, Sally Galvez, who has been by her side the last three years, and the very caring nurses and staff of 4 North at the North Austin Medical Center. The family will receive visitors from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm, Thursday evening, February 7, 2013 at Cook-Walden Funeral Home on North Lamar. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2013 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks in Pflugerville, with Pastor Dan Gardner officiating.
